A Father's Childish Ode to His Daughter

Amelia is wearing her second outfit of the day provided by Miss Jena. The first one the nurse put on her (from Miss Becky) had to be changed before I got there. Her diaper overflowed and she wet all over it. This is the clean outfit. She is also wearing a little pink hat the Woodalls sent her. I am currently washing the outfit she wet on and we will try again tomorrow!

Amelia came out much too early,
(Though, still she was very much girly)
Her surfactant was low,
On the vent did she go,
And touching her made her quite surly.

She’s been on the vent all these days,
And they’ve changed them in various ways,
Though better she feels,
They keep pricking her heels,
And her lungs are still graying with haze.

Her PDA was first to the fix,
It was dumping bad crud to the mix,
They tried closing with meds,
Then clamped it instead,
And now it’s not up to its tricks.

In the NICU infections will happen,
To date 3 she has gotten while nappin’,
She took antibiotics,
And other narcotics,
And the bugs those things did get to zappin’.

Her fluids’ retention was bad,
For a while she was puffy and sad,
But good dopamine,
Made her urine stream,
And now she is peeing like mad.

Sundays have been worse for this lass,
Than other days that she goes past,
Sicker she’ll get,
From tube plugs, and yet,
She’s always recovered en masse.

Through it all she has et like a horse,
Mother’s milk plus TPN was the course,
Now they’ve increased milk rate,
And she’s tripled her weight,
Now Mommy is her only food source.

Since she’s bigger she’s wearing some clothes,
With flowers and cute pinky bows,
Petite in her dress,
Her pleats neatly pressed,
She’s ready to walk fashion shows.

From this you will all quite agree,
Amelia has done wonderf’ly,
She continues to fight,
In the end there is light,
And soon she will come home with me.

I am already envisioning her eyes rolling when you do 'Ode to my Teenager' in 2012.

Todd this is very sweet and very touching. This is a memory created before all of our eyes and I'm sure Amelia will one day come back and read this in her adulthood, and it will be a window into the past and see daddy's heart. I wish Cristina, you and Amelia many beautiful memories to come.
