Wean is the Word

They started her on the dexamethosone yesterday at 3:00. I know there is a bad study out there with that, but my doctor gave me a study he was part of to read that was published in Pediatrics. The babies in the study were exactly like her (older, given lower doses for shorter periods of time and with very bad lung disease who were vent dependent) and with a two year follow up they didn't have adverse effects in their growth or mental development, so I am hopeful she will be fine on them. They know for sure if she stays on the vent for about a month or so longer, it can have damaging effects on her mental development. She needs to kick this vent soon. They told me they can start to see results within 72 hours. Everyone cross your appendages and pray that this is what will finally do it for her.

I called for her blood gas this morning and it was in the 60s, so they weaned her rate from 30 BPM to 27 BPM. Yes, we have seen these numbers before. She had gotten down as far as 15 BPM before she had her set back. It has only been 18 hours since they administered the steroid and it seems like it is working after one dose. She will have another blood gas at 1:00. Let's hope we can wean her some more!
