My, what big cheeks you have, Amelia!
Amelia is 8lbs 11ozs - over 4Kgs, now. They've cut her calorie intake but her volume is the same at 67mls. She's been gaining weight so well, they don't want her to pudge out so quickly, but still want her to get some length.
She did not have an MIR, because when they took her and tried to change out her CPAP, she complained a lot. So they are going to try it again on Tuesday.
She had PT and OT on Friday, with a massage and some physical workout. Christina and I both try to get her out of her bed and get her limbs moving, but she's still behind on her strength conditioning, but we'll get her caught up. Her OT, where they work with her oral stimulation, was a hit and miss.. For the first time, they gave her a bottle and tried to make her suck from it. It's very hard for babies who have been intubated and vented as long as Amelia to learnt the proper way to suck her pacifier and bottle nipples, so the OT is working to try and train her. She took about half a ML before she was so discomforted that they gave up. But it's not a waste. The nurses are first to tell us that many babies have done alot worse. It just takes time.
She's been awake during the days, and sleeps almost all night long. And, apparently, she has her father's morning attitude... if she wakes up before 8am, she's crabby, but after that, she's a happy camper.
Her FIO2 needs have been consistenly in the 50% range, dipping all the way down to 40% and all the way to 60% last night... but 50% has been the prime number. Xina and I and and her primaries have made it a point to make sure she doesn't get bumped up too quickly, and that the on duty nurses stay patient with her de-sats, and not just turn her up at the drop of a hat... she even has a warning sign on her vent one of the nurses made for her. I think it's helping a lot. Amelia seems to ride the easy lane when you let her and rise to the occasion when you force her, which is why the head of the dep't is always aggrssive on her care. She's doing very well the last couple of days and this morning.
But if she continues on the current trend, I feel much more optimistic about her being home for Halloween. It would be great if they got her to a CPAP of 4 by the end of the next week.
Finally, a quick congratulations to Aunty Tooty, Sister Elizabeth Ann, who is celebrating her 50th year as a nun this weekend. And to Amelia's newest cousin Thomas, whose baptism is also this weekend. Xina went home (home being a relative term, as her home is always where Amelia and I are - I hope) for the occassions, which is a well deserved break for her.

Mommy came back home this weekend, and we tried to keep her very busy so she wouldn't miss you very much. But Grammy knows how much your mommy still missed you while she was here without you; she checked on you several times a day and called your daddy when he sent the newest pictures of you to her.
She helped me immensely with Aunt Tooty's Reception and although we were busier than little bees she still managed to talk to family and friends about you. Even compared you and Aunt Katie and Uncle Thomas' new baby. About your similarities and your differences. She talked about you with everyone. We ALL missed you and daddy being here with us; we wish more than anything that you could have been here. Soon, little bunny, soon.
Your cousin Thomas was baptized on Saturday and he behaved himself reasonably well. He is generally a pretty good little boy, though he is always hungry and is a very noisy sleeper. Thomas is only 4 weeks younger than you, and although you two are just about the same size and weight, I think you could take him. After all, you are getting the added bonus of all that physical therapy, so let's see if you can put it to good use. You be sure to pay special attention to them while they are exercising your legs and arms. We'll set up a wrestling match and Grammy will be the referee. I am rooting for you with special interest.
