Let's Go with the Flow

Amelia's still riding the nasal canula. They've decided to wean her in a different way... The pump has two settings, one for her FI02 and one for her flow rate (which is akin to pressure on a regular vent). Since she will be on oxygen when she comes home, the machines they give us at that time only pump 100% enriched O2. At her age there's no danger of ROP, so they decided to just go ahead and use that method. Instead of weaning her O2, they will work on weaning her flow rate (measured in liters per minute - LPM) That's what Xina and I will be referring to when talking of her stats.

So, she is at 2LPMs and doing just fine. In fact, during my visit tonight, she only had a desat during her treatment when her O2 tube leading to her nose got pinched and wasn't allowing flow. Ooops. Otherwise, her day and night after the decision was very good. She's breathing fast still, so they were unable to work on her OT today. Hopefully, she'll get used to her new settings and her lungs will work easier in the next few days so that we can start the bottle feeding training in earnest. At this point, the time it takes her to learn and take 8 bottles in a day will be about the same time she can get onto an acceptable LPM flow to go home. We hope.... 6 weeks?

We'll see.

She was 10lbs 2ozs tonight... unbelievable. And they increased the size of her feeds. I'm not sure I use as much milk on my cereal.

Keep your spirits up C&T, just a little hickup and she will be back to working hard and on task again. Just give her the weekend to recoup. Two steps forward and one back is still progress--just not as quickly as we had hoped for. Amelia is amazing, and we will all be saying our prayers that she reaches her next goal, and stays there. Love MOM/Grammy
