Yesterday, practicing sitting up in her pretty, pretty, pink chair. She threw up all over it about 5 minutes later!

Amelia is doing well lately. She is still at 3 LPM on her flow. If she can get her oxygen requirement down into the 40% range they will wean her down to 2.5 LPM. Right now is ranges from about 50-65%. This higher flow is letting her breathe well and get lots of good bottle feeding practice.
We have been practicing her sucking skills with a pacifier in between feeds. Over the weekend I was talking to someone who is a speech therapist who also works with kids with feeding issues and she gave me some ideas on how to make Amelia more accepting of the pacifier. The fact that she can swallow from a cup proves that there is nothing wrong with her swallowing, but she really seems to have an oral aversion and very sensative gag reflex.
The OT lady decided to screw the nipple off the cap the other day to see if she would just swallow the formula as if she were drinking from a cup and it worked pretty well. She drank 20 ccs this way, which is the most she has done yet. So now I think they are going to do a combo of nipple feeding and cup feeding with her. They say they don't care how she gets it in as long as she is getting it in orally. Two of her podmates had g-tubes put in recently, and I don't want her to join the ranks.
She is getting bigger, more cuddly and more fun to play with by the day. We read stories, play on our play mat, sit up in our big girl chair, sing songs and take naps. It is always an action packed afternoon!

Mommy really enjoyed the extra attention you got from dressing up for Halloween. You were absolutely the finest miniature flapper, ever. You get that dance routine down pat and Grammy will do her best to get it to the powers that be; no off Broadway debut for you toots, only the real thing.
Continue to practice with your paci, drink your feeds from a cup if that's what it takes to make these ladies happy and see the smile on their faces when you step through the next phase of development. Mommy got some solid info on getting you over some of your gagging issues and I can't wait to hear how you take to all that. Keep up the good work, Love Grammy
I feel your pain with the paci thing. Sam NEVER took a paci, and I hear that some kids just don't want it. It really sucks in Amelia's case though, because clearly if she would just accept it, it could potentially help her practice bottle feeding. Also, Sam had (and still has) and amazing gag refelx, which is another one of those things that some kids just have. I feel your pain with both of them, and I pray that she finds a way to work through them and masters eating soon. She looks so great sitting in that bumbo!

Day by day Amelia is looking wonderful !!! She is looking so content sitting up in her big girl chair......we just know that God is taking her around that corner that will lead to home ! Keep working hard Amelia....it won't be long now.
