Amelia needs a fundoplication surgery. Her reflux is not getting better on the meds. A fundo is a surgery where they go in and tighten the sphincter muscle between the lower espophogus and the opening of the stomach. This makes it virtually impossible to reflux. We had dabbled with the idea of a GJ tube, which is another tube threaded through her G tube that goes directly to her intestines. However, this would not resolve part of what they suspect is her problem -- microaspiration of the contents of the stomach. Even without food, the stomach has bile and acids and things like that, that should be aspirating on.
Over the past month her oxygen requirement has gone up significantly. Though she never seems to make any of her reflux tests positive, they say they are going to recommend it to surgery. Our lead neonatologist will consult with surgery today. Because she is on a lot of oxygen and because of her pulmonary hypertension, this surgery could be dangerous. They are going to give her a round of steroids before the surgery so that we can get the swelling in her lungs and her airway reduced -- hopefully allowing her oxygen requirement to come down significantly and get her into a safer range for surgery. We will keep everyone posted on an actual date. As always, please keep her in our prayers.

Oh Amelia.....it is just another pothole in the road home. Needless to say, you and your parents definitely deserve a smoothly paved road to come your way. You know you and your family are always in our thoughts and prayers.
